“Hi, “Sandra said on the telephone looking at the graphs, which an IBM computer was showing. She was working at Zimbabwe Alloys Limited. Zimbabwe Alloys Limited was alongside Bristol Road looking across at Zimbabwe Casting Limited. Next to it was Zimbabwe Oxygen Industries that was also in Bristol Road corner Portland Road. Both were close to Zimbabwe Glass Industries to the north. “Can I help you?”

“Is that TM Supermarket?”

“What?”

“Is that dad?”

“What?”

“Is that the 3FM studios?”

“No it’s just you and me,” she replied wondering who it was.

“Well your daughter is scheduled to be kidnapped after school at one-ten in the afternoon. Would you mind if I collected and took her to the horse farm? She won’t eat horse flesh I promise you,” Alistair had said.

“Hi Alistair,” she replied.

She felt a sweet gush of relief now that he had contacted her after a week.

“Well what’s the verdict then?”

“Guilty.”

“I will serve the sentence by collecting and bringing her to the farm tonight,” he had replied.

“Supper?”

“Curried chicken and mashed potatoes will do. I like vegetable salad especially cabbage, carrot, apple and banana,” he had replied.

“I will tell the chef then.”

“Cheerio Sandy,” she had heard before the line went dead.

She stood up and looked over the steel prison that was her workplace. Here and there could be seen smoke stacks as the company operated at full gear to earn foreign currency for the country while maintaining the lives of thousands of workers and families. As was usual there was the normal clutter, whine and whirring of machinery that was heard twenty-four hours a day. In the evening when the blast furnaces were tipped, the whole of northwestern Mkoba and eastern Monomutapa-Ascot were light in a brilliant mixture of orange, red and yellow.

Then there was the familiar sound of several express trains passing by which was caused when the blast furnaces tipped or where righted again. North of the industrial plants there was a large swathe of land that had been turned white with ash like deposits. Zimbabwe Alloys was not the only heavy industry in the area. It was sited next to Zimbabwe Oxygen Industries, Zimbabwe Glass Industries and across Bristol Road was Zimbabwe Casting. Alistair had sent a wave running through her.

In the evening she joined the throng of workers, officers and executives driving home. She took her company provided Mazda 323 notchback 1985 model driving out of the gates. She used Portland Road before she emerged in Bulawayo Road turning right for the west after the traffic circle. She took the road at speed before turning right into Lundi Drive. It was a short hundred metres or so before she turned right driving down ignoring a turn on the left.

She headed towards a depression where there were no houses on the left before she turned left into Gwenoro Dam Road. She left South Downs behind her emerging with parts of Lundi River on her left and a blank landscape on the right. The road rose in gradient before falling towards a seasonal stream then it rose again heading towards a sharp curve to the left.
